all the small things

It's Earth Day!

So on Earth Day, it seems you are bound to hear the question: "What have you done to go green?" Whether or not it is posed directly to you, it gets you thinking, doesn't it?

Bix and I are proud to say that it is our 6 month anniversary of two things: using energy efficient lightbulbs and saying goodbye to traditional paper towels and napkins. The lightbulbs were really a no-brainer. I mean, how easy is it to just replace a lightbulb. The no paper towels and napkins began as an experiment...and an excuse to go to HomeGoods, one of my favorite stores! I went to HomeGoods specifically looking for napkins and paper towels that were washable and I was pleasantly surprised by what I found: packs of hotel quality white cloth napkins, bar towels and microfiber cloths. We began using cloth napkins and every meal turned into a fine dining experience! Well, that might be an exaggeration, but still......

I was worried about using bar towels instead of paper towels, but I found that I like them a whole lot better. I do not go through them as fast as I would have gone through paper towels, which was surprising.

Some might wonder just how much extra laundry this has created and if it truly is worth it. Stop your questions, it is worth it! I only do one additional load of laundry a week! I know, shocking! Since all of the cloth towels and napkins are white, I can do one load and i'm done!

So there's my bit of green advice for this happy earth day!

I like the idea of using less paper towels. Thanks for the advice and the tip on the bar towels.!

I'm liking this idea! This is a great tip; I hate using so many paper towels. We try to get the ones where you can "pick a size" to save a little on waste, but yeah bar towels are awesome! I know a friend who owns a bar who can probably get me a good discount...I think I'll have to look into this...

Christopher and I went a few months without paper towels before, and used old vintage dish towels instead. After awhile we broke down and bought recycled paper towels instead. We use maybe 2 a day, so I still feel like we're making a difference.
